Sarrebourg? Where is it?
Sarrebourg is a small city in North East France, it is about 5 hours by car from Enschede. The city is 55 km west of Strasbourg and 65 km east of Nancy.
Un petit histoire
Roughly 2800 years ago an unknown tribal chief walked along the Saar river. Suddenly he decided to set up his hut and establish a settlement and this is the beginning of Sarrebourg. We heard some whispering that this might have been Abraracourcix, but this is not confirmed. Throughout the years the city was occupied by the Germans and conquered by the French and the other way around. In 1851 the industrial revolution also arrived in Sarrebourg and the railway Paris-Strasbourg was opened. By then it was only a city with 2.500 inhabitants nowadays this has grown to 12.700 people. Thanks to the railway Sarrebourg has a good railway service with Stratsbourg, Nancy and Paris. The trip to Paris can be done within 3 hours and is partly done by the high speed TGV.
The city
Sarrebourg is nice small city with lot’s to see, for example the Saar river which runs through. In the centre are various restaurants and bars. A nice happening which we should see are the fireworks on the evening before the French national holiday, “Le Quatorze Julliet” (14 July).
The surroundings
Our camp lies at the foot of the Vogezen, a mountainous area covered with woods. This is a beautiful and challenging area to fly over, but is also great from the ground. Within 10 km of our location are hills of 400 meter and 30 km further you will find a rig of 800 meter high. The real stuff is a bit further, the Grand Ballon of 1433 high can be found 90 km from our camp site. The area can perfectly be explored by food or mountain bike and numerous waterfalls are hidden here.
